Join Tom at Big Beynon’s blacksmithing to forge an Iron Age ring knife using historic methods and tools. You’ll begin with iron or low carbon steel which you’ll heat in the historically accurate forge, and hammer into shape. You’ll learn hammer hardening techniques, and how to sharpen the blade using stones. The session will demonstrate the effectiveness of such simple knives, before the existence of modern steels.
While obtaining his history degree at the University of Leicester, Tom decided that office work was not for him and gave blacksmithing a try (naturally). After attending some night classes, he was hooked and upon completion of his degree, went to learn Blacksmithing and Metalworking at Warwick college in 2011. With a great interest in history, Tom started providing Tudor blacksmithing demonstrations for Mary Arden’s Farm in Stratford-Upon Avon while he studied at College. Beyond just learning to forge, he looked into the life and craft and social status of the Blacksmith in the 16th Century while sharing his research with visitors of the farm.
Now in 2019, Tom is providing historic blacksmithing demonstrations across the UK, showing the life of Blacksmiths from the Early Iron Age to the Victorians, all the while running his blacksmithing business making both modern and historical knives, artistic work and just about anything else- as long as its not horseshoes!
